It’s a High-Flying Hangout Day!
In his meet-and-greet event held September 15 at the Ayala Malls Manila Bay Activity Center, Ernest John ‘EJ’ Obiena, 28, our very own Olympic pole vaulter and tagged as the nation’s boyfriend, expressed his gratitude for the support of Filipino fans and the love from his countrymen.
Fresh from the 2024 Paris Olympics, President Bongbong Marcos awarded EJ, along with other Olympians, the presidential citations and cash incentives totaling PHP 1 million. Additionally, the local government of Manila awarded him PHP 500,000.
Despite not completing the other parts of the Diamond League due to his spine injury confirmed by a CAT scan revealing a fractured L5 vertebra. He promised his fans that he would come back even stronger and assured them that he would be back raising the Philippine flag on a global scale.
EJ, along with other world-class athletes; Hali Long, Jamie Lim, and Alyssa Valdez, in a “Athlete’s huddle” shared their memorable experiences as honed athletes over time and expressed how grateful they are for the opportunity to represent the country and giving pride and honor for the Philippines.
In a conversation with the press, EJ sincerely expressed his advocacy to raise more awareness and support for the pole vault sport and being an instrument to be able to raise the next generation of pole vaulters especially for the younger ones, “I want to give the same opportunity that I was able to get, to share with everybody, with the kids, and hopefully they’ll enjoy the sport that I enjoy, experience the sport that’s brought me to the place that I never thought I would be,” Obiena said.
Apart from experiencing the inner ‘fandom’ feels, Aurelyn Mendoza, PR Specialist for ND, happily meets EJ’s sister, Emily Obiena. On the other hand, North-Diamond Managing Director, Ariel Sardalla, conveyed to EJ Obiena’s father, Emerson Obiena, that the company supports EJ’s advocacy and is committed to backing pole vaulting. This commitment aligns with efforts to make a meaningful impact on Philippine sports as a whole.
