ACT OF BRAVERY: “My Teacher, My Hero”

As the Philippines celebrates Independence Day, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of the heroes who fought for our nation’s freedom. 

Yet beyond the pages of history, acts of heroism continue to unfold every day — often in the most unexpected places, including our schools.

When a powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Mindanao on the first day of classes, schools across the region suspended operations as families and communities grappled with fear and uncertainty.

Among the stories that touched the hearts of many Filipinos was what happened during the morning flag ceremony at Mahayahay Elementary School in Malita, Davao Occidental. As the ground shook violently, teachers immediately sprang into action, guiding their students to safety and ensuring that every child remained calm and protected.

One statement stood out: “The flag ceremony saved us.”

Because they were already gathered in an open area, teachers and students were able to quickly follow safety protocols and evacuation procedures. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Another moving image that spread across social media showed a teacher from La Filipina National High School shielding a student from danger during the earthquake. The photograph became a powerful symbol of courage, compassion, and selfless love.

Their actions remind us that heroism is not confined to battlefields or history books. Much like the brave Filipinos who fought for our independence, these teachers demonstrated unwavering dedication, putting the safety and well-being of others before themselves.
